The kids are home for the summer. I must force my unrested self to write. Having the kids home, although great and fun, sure does cut into my sleep time. I think its worth it, though.
We've been having some fun downloading songs from iTunes, and I had a realization that I just might be getting older. My kids were pointing out some music that their friends play a lot at school and so forth that they asked to download. I listened to one particular song that they wanted...I thought it was about a pretty girl who was a good dancer at the dance club. OK, stop laughing...yes, I was wrong. When Dave heard the song they were listening to...well, lets just say that I'm not quite on top of my street terms. The song is very dirty. How embarassing. So, now I had a problem. I called my boys into the kitchen and explained to them that the song was very bad...and tried to use a very mild explanation of why.
That's when they amazed me.
They had been listening to the song a lot, and liked it for its beat. They would dance around the family room and were happy because they had what their friends had. I expected their reaction to begin an argument. Well, they shrugged and said, "OK," and then raced each other to the computer to be the first one to delete it off of our music library...no questions asked. I was proud of them. Later Andrew came to me and said, "Sorry, Mom. I thought it was about a girl dancing. I'm glad you told me."
I guess all the teaching and "parenting" that we do does sometimes make a difference. I was encouraged.
